FAQs

Q: How old does my son/daughter have to be to play Little League?
WPLL follows the age requirements set by Little League Int'l, which are slightly different for BB and SB. Click HERE to be taken to the LLI webpage, select BB or SB, and see where your son or daughter would be placed in LL. As players age and develop WPLL will consider allowing them to "play up" with players a year or two older if they demonstrate the ability to compete, develop and still have fun.

Q: My son/daughter would like to be on the same team as their friend/neighbor. Can you make this happen?
A: While WPLL would love to be able to place friends and neighbors on the same team at their request, please understand that (i) we get dozens of these requests per season - if they were all honored, teams would end up being enormously lopsided (because numerous requests pertain to an overlap of children) and (ii) WPLL is a 100% volunteer organization, so handling numerous requests of this nature becomes administratively impossible.

Q: My son/daughter either (i) is more advanced that other children his/her age and would like to "play up" or (ii) would like to play with their friend, who is in a different age division. Can you please make this happen?
A: WPLL strictly adheres to the age cutoffs that are required by Little League International. We receive dozens of requests to depart from this each year, but please understand that (i) if we consider one request, we have to consider all (and we are a 100% volunteer organization, so fairly considering all such requests is administratively impossible), (ii) while your child may be more advanced than others at his/her age level, his/her playing with the other children will provide those children with better competition and improve them as players (i.e. your child can help the less-advanced children) and (iii) when it comes to District tournament play, every child will eventually have to revert to their appropriate age level of play.

Q. When does registration open/close and when do the spring, summer and fall seasons happen?
Registration for the spring season opens the previous November and closes by mid-February. Late registration, with a late fee, is open until the end of February. WPLL uses the month of March to allocate the 500+ registrants to teams, purchase uniforms and equipment, identify and train coaches and managers, and secure fields from the City and School District. The spring season begins in mid-April and ends in mid-June. Registration for the summer season opens in late May and closes in Mid-June. The summer season usually starts around July 4th and ends in mid-August. Registration for the fall season opens in early August and closes in late August. The fall season usually starts the week of Labor Day and ends in late October.

Q: We registered our son/daughter to play in WPLL, but haven’t heard anything yet. When will we hear from someone?
A: WPLL appreciates your patience. From the close of spring registration in February to early April we are busy with over 500 registrations, creating teams, ordering uniforms and equipment, securing fields, scheduling practices and games, etc. The draft and team allocation process takes time and is accomplished over a multi-week period. If you have friends who have already heard about their team placement and you haven’t, it’s likely that your draft simply hasn’t taken place yet. We always do our best to inform players of their placement promptly and in due course - and will reach out to you as soon as we are able. In general, Managers begin reaching out to their player parents at the end of March and beginning of April. You should hear from your child's manager by April 15th. If you don't then please feel free to contact us at [email protected]

Q: My child’s team isn’t as competitive as I’d like it to be - why are some teams better than others?
A: We appreciate your concern, but please understand that WPLL Spring Baseball/Softball is a developmental program that is open to children of all skill levels. While the WPLL Board and their related faculties do their absolute best to allocate talent evenly each year (and countless volunteer hours go into this process), sometimes children develop at different rates and there are other anomalies, etc., which result in the competition not being perfectly even. While we encourage more competitive players to seek challenge with outside programs, we simultaneously encourage them to continue on with WPLL - District Tournament play (i.e., the path to the Little League World Series) is an enormously rewarding experience.

Q: How do I apply for a partial or full scholarship for the registration fee.
A:Those requesting a partial or full scholarship can do so in writing on the In-Person Registration form. Click here for more information.

Q: I have experienced a problem with a manager, coach or other WPLL official. How can I communicate my concern?
A: Please email us ASAP at [email protected]

Q: When does the Spring League start? How long do they play for?
A: The average WPLL Spring League starts in mid-April (weather permitting) and runs through mid-June. We try to end the season on the weekend prior to the end of the school year.

Q: What does my child need to play Skills/Tee-Ball or Rookie Division baseball or softball?
A: All players should have a glove/mitt that fits their hand and they can open/close. Inexpensive gloves/mitts can be purchased at Dick's Sporting Goods or online. Children will out-grow a glove/mitt every few years, so don't purchase an expensive glove/mitt for them until they are in middle or high school and committed to the sport. You can also find "gently used" gloves/mitts at the WPLL Equipment Swap held annually in the Spring and following the Opening Day Parade. In addition, your child should have a good-fitting pair of sneakers or athletic shoes. They do not need "cleats" for Skills/Rookie, but can use multi-sport cleats if they are also playing football or soccer.

Q. What does my child need to play Minors Division baseball or softball?
A: In addition to a glove, players should have good-fitting athletic shoes or rubber cleats. Boys are encouraged to wear an athletic cup, it is only mandatory for catchers, and girls are highly encouraged to wear a mask on defense if they are pitching or playing the infield. Parents might also want to purchase a good-fitting helmet for their child, but WPLL makes helmets available to every team. Softball helmets have face masks while many baseball helmets have a "c flap" on the side of the head facing the pitcher to protect the jaw. BB/SB pants are no longer provided by WPLL and can be purchased inexpensively at Dick's or online. WPLL conducts an Equipment Swap each spring and pants and other apparel are generally available there (free). If your son or daughter is committed to BB/SB you will want to purchase a bat for them. Bats range significantly in price but a good bat can last 2-3 years (like gloves, children out-grow bats).

Q: What about other equipment -- helmet, bat, cleats, etc.?
A: Generally speaking, your child will need more equipment as they age and show commitment to the sport. Helmets are provided by WPLL, but many parents prefer to purchase their own helmet. Bats are not provided, but some players have their own bat and some will share with their teammates. Cleats are recommended for players in Minors and above, as they provide better traction than sneakers on grass and dirt.

Q. Why can't I call and speak to someone?
A: WPLL is a 100% volunteer organization. Our volunteers have full-time jobs and families. We encourage people to visit our website and read our FAQs (as you are doing!) to find the answers to their questions. If you can't find an answer you can email info@ or [email protected] and someone will respond. If there is an issue that warrants conversation someone will contact you or give you contact information.

Q: What times, days, and/or fields can I expect my son/daughter to be playing on during the course of the Spring League?
A: The chart below provides some GENERAL insight on when different programs meet based on prior years, but schedules are influenced by # of participants and field availability, and thus subject to change EVERY YEAR. Please consider the chart below as directional only. Actual schedules for practices and games will be available in early-mid April.

Q: I registered for WPLL before knowing the actual schedule of games/practices. We need to withdraw. Can we get a refund?
A: We recognize that things change and that our actual schedules for games/practices might create conflicts with other activities. While we don't want to see anyone deprioritize baseball/softball(!) we certainly understand and will gladly issue a refund if you can please make that decision before practices/games start. Please send an email to [email protected] and we will process a refund.
